Upper Austria, 1750: The deeply religious and highly sensitive Agnes marries the farmer Wolf. Soon she feels alienated in her husband's world. Agnes feels trapped in her new life in an emotionally cold village community, with hard work and a demanding mother-in-law. She withdraws more and more, but again and again she is forced into her appointed place. An act of violence seems to her to be the only way out.

The vernacular of the 18th century said that melancholic people were trapped in the devil's bath. THE DEVIL'S BATH takes the viewer into the rural milieu of the 18th century and brilliantly conveys its isolating narrowness and darkness. After I SEE, I SEE, Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala have achieved another stroke of genius, which was honoured with the Silver Bear for outstanding artistic achievement at the 2024 Berlinale.
