After Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) and his mother (Taraji P. Henson) move from Detroit to China, Dre feels lost in the new, completely foreign world. When he is bullied and beaten up by schoolmates, he is rescued by the caretaker of his apartment block, Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who has suffered a terrible loss. Mr. Han takes pity on Dre and promises to teach him kung fu so that he can defend himself. During the training, mutual trust grows between teacher and student, which leads to a friendship that is healing for both of them.
