In the war year 1940, the submarine Cappellini encounters the armed Belgian merchant ship Kabalo in the Atlantic. When the Italians succeed in sinking the British-flagged ship, 26 sailors are threatened with death by drowning. But against his instructions, the headstrong commander Todaro orders the shipwrecked to be rescued. But because some of them are forced to stay on the command tower due to the limited space, the boat cannot dive – and could become easy prey for enemy attacks at any time.

Pierfrancesco Favino (WORLD WAR Z) shines in the role of the intrepid submarine commander who has retained his humanity even in dark times. As a hero with rough edges, the charismatic "Italo-Götz-George" ("Die Welt") awakens memories of Jürgen Prochnow's legendary "old man" in DAS BOOT. The film, which was shot at great expense – the Cappellini was recreated in original size – with its sweaty action in claustrophobic confinement is nothing less than Italy's answer to Wolfgang Petersen's war film classic.
