John Huston's literary adaptation AFRICAN QUEEN is probably one of the most beautiful love stories from Hollywood in the 1950s and has inscribed itself in film history as a timeless adventure film classic, which was nominated for four Oscars® in 1952, one of which Humphrey Bogart received as Best Actor. "The hero is a proletarian," Huston described the film character to his friend Bogart, "and you are the greatest proletarian in town and therefore ideally suited for the role." With the casting of Katharine Hepburn as the perfect counterpart to Bogart, Huston has achieved a stroke of genius that also paid off at the box office. The screenplay by John Huston and James Agee was based on the novel of the same name by C.S. Forester. For the exterior shots, the director went with the actors and a crew of 34 to the then Belgian colony of Congo and to Uganda, where the filming was almost as exciting as the film plot itself.
