"Léon earns his money as a contract killer for the Italo Mafia in the streets of New York. He lives in seclusion, but when the family of his neighbor's daughter Mathilda is brutally killed, the girl escapes to his apartment. A close friendship blossoms between the two and Léon promises Mathilda to train her as a professional killer so that she can take revenge on the murderers of her family.
Directed by genre specialist Luc Besson, LÉON - THE PROFESSIONAL was released in cinemas in 1994 and is now considered an absolute genre cult film and one of the best action films of the 90s. Brilliantly cast with character actors Jean Reno and Gary Oldman as well as Oscar® winner Natalie Portman, the film manages to inspire again and again. LÉON - THE PROFESSIONAL was nominated in seven categories at the 1995 Césars Awards and was awarded a Czech Lion for Best Foreign Language Film in 1996. Patrice Grisolet, John Morris and Bruno Tarrière received a Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Mixing. 10 years after the first release, the film was released again in a 23-minute longer director's cut, which gives a deeper insight into the heart of the story - the relationship between Léon and Matilda.
